Perfection Has Its Limits

"Even perfection has its limits..." (Psalm 119:96 NLT)

Heading into summer, we're all looking to make improvements. Our selves, our projects, around the house, with the family: we've got summer plans, summer book lists, summer goals, summer projects, summer aspirations.

We want to get everything on our lists done. We also want to relax a lot more.

Now's our chance to make that change we've been putting off. But also it's finally a chance to just chill!

Ever since Babel and before we-humans are fascinated with perfection. We want to be more! We want better for ourselves!

1% better, every day: c'mon! We can do this!

"Even perfection has its limits..."

Or, the way Jesus says it, Moth and rust corrupt and thieves break in and steal. (Mat 6:20)

Even the things we obtain by our sweat that are exactly the thing we wanted don't end up being exactly what we'd hoped for, nor do they even stay very close to it for long--they rust, break, fade, dim, are repaired, replaced, discarded.

All our attempts to be or obtain perfection have... limits.

*cough cough

"...but Your commands have no limit." (Psalm 119:96b)

Human perfectability stalls out. It does not reach its desired end. But God's Word is an ocean. Those who dive into the commands of God, to the life that He calls us to in Scripture, discover an endless sea to explore, each command more wise, useful, and kind than the last. And each command we unwrap through obedience reveals further depths of blessing hidden within.

The generosity of God has no end.

God's commands have no limits. They are infinitely beautiful. They are infinitely helpful. They are infinitely blessed. They are really, really good.

It's summer time. Time to get busy. And around and around we go.

But I can tell you that there's one thing that you can dig into that will give you both satisfaction in the moment and a sense of adventure as you grow: knowing and obeying the word of the Lord.

So, as summer begins, consider receiving this season as a time to get to know God better in His Word, to consider the commands Scripture calls you to, and to explore them in a fresh way.

May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Glory, give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation so that you get to know Him better and the eyes of your heart open. (Eph 1:17)
